What is Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal?
Pharmaceutical waste disposal involves the safe and legal management of medications that are no longer fit for use. Improper disposal (such as discarding meds in the regular trash or flushing them) can lead to severe environmental contamination and significant legal liabilities. Following strict state and federal regulations is essential to prevent harm to the public and the water supply.
HealthCare Medical Waste Services (HMWS) provides the most reliable pharmaceutical waste disposal in Colorado. With over 20 years of experience serving the local medical community, we ensure total compliance with CDPHE and EPA regulations, offering healthcare facilities a secure, efficient, and cost-effective solution for managing pharmaceutical surplus.
About Our Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Service
Healthcare facilities across Colorado generate pharmaceutical waste that must be managed in accordance with federal and state regulations. From expired medications and partially used pharmaceuticals to hazardous pharmaceutical waste, proper disposal helps reduce environmental risks while maintaining regulatory compliance.
HMWS provides dependable pharmaceutical waste disposal services throughout Colorado with scheduled pickups, compliant containers, transportation, and environmentally responsible treatment methods, allowing healthcare providers to focus on patient care. Colorado healthcare facilities handling hazardous pharmaceutical waste must also comply with applicable EPA hazardous waste pharmaceutical standards adopted by the state.

Our 4-Step Biohazard Disposal Process

Step 1
Container & Labeling
-
Non-RCRA pharmaceutical waste must be placed in designated white or blue containers.
-
Before use, ensure each container is labeled with your facility’s name, address, and contact information.
-
Lids and sides must be clearly labeled with “HIGH HEAT” or “INCINERATION ONLY” per Arizona state guidelines.

Step 2
Interim Storage Area
-
Place your white/blue pharmaceutical containers in a designated area that is either locked or under direct professional supervision.
-
Place qualified pharmaceuticals into the container immediately after use. Continue until the contents reach the indicated "FULL" line.

Step 3
Designated Accumulation Area
-
Once the container is full or ready for pickup, tightly secure the lid using locking tabs and, if available, tape.
-
On your scheduled service day, move containers from interim storage to your accumulation area. Place them next to (NOT INSIDE) your regulated medical waste (RMW) containers.
PRO TIP: Pharmaceutical waste containers also serve as a safe disposal method for sharps and syringes that still contain residual pharmaceutical liquid.

Step 4
Scheduled Medical Waste Service
-
During your scheduled visit, HMWS will exchange your full white/blue containers on a one-for-one basis, then transport them for disposal.
-
Any waste not containerized by the time our technician arrives will be picked up during your next scheduled service.
