What is Sharps Waste Disposal?

Sharps waste disposal involves the safe collection and disposal of needles, syringes, lancets, and other sharp medical devices that pose health risks through potential injuries and infections. Proper disposal is essential to prevent needlestick injuries and contamination. These items must be placed in puncture-resistant containers and disposed of through regulated processes to ensure safety.

4 Steps to Safe Sharps Disposal

Step 1
 Strategic Placement & Labeling

Before use, ensure every sharps container is clearly labeled with your facility’s name and contact information. Place containers in the "point of use" area (e.g., countertops or wall-mounted units in patient rooms) to ensure immediate disposal after a procedure.

Step 2
Proper Filling & Sealing

Immediately place used sharps into the container. Monitor the fill level closely; containers should never be filled past the "FULL" line (typically 3/4 of the total volume). Once reached, securely lock the lid using the integrated tabs.

Step 3
Secure Accumulation

On or before your scheduled service date, move the sealed sharps containers to your designated accumulation area. Place them upright inside your larger Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) container.

Step 4
Scheduled Collection & Exchange

On your scheduled service day, our trained technicians will perform a one-for-one exchange of your containers. We will take your full containers for compliant treatment and deliver any pre-ordered supplies (bags, new sharps containers, etc.) to keep your practice running smoothly.

FAQ

  • Per ADEQ (A.A.C. R18-13-1407), containers must be rigid, puncture-resistant, and leak-proof on the sides and bottom. They must be clearly labeled with the universal biohazard symbol and a distinct "fill line" to prevent overfilling. Once full, they must have a secure, locking lid that prevents spillage during transport.

  • In Arizona, biohazardous medical waste (including sharps) can be stored for up to 90 days, once the container is full or no longer in use. However, if the waste causes a nuisance or odor, ADEQ may require more frequent removal or refrigeration (below 40°F).

  • Yes. Arizona law requires storage areas to display warning signs in both English and Spanish: "CAUTION – BIOHAZARDOUS MEDICAL WASTE STORAGE AREA – UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT" and its Spanish equivalent. HMWS ensures your facility is equipped with compliant, bilingual signage to meet these strict state standards.

  • You must maintain a "Compliance Binder" for at least one year (though three years is recommended) containing:

    • Waste Tracking Documents/Manifests (signed by the generator, transporter, and disposal facility).

    • Employee Training Records (OSHA and safety protocols).

    • Treatment Certificates provided by HMWS.

    • Your Facility’s Medical Waste Management Plan.

  • Any item capable of puncturing or cutting the skin should go into a sharps container, specifically:

    • Needles, syringes, and lancets.

    • Scalpels and razor blades.

    • Broken glass (vials or ampules) contaminated with biohazardous material.

    • Auto-injectors and infusion sets.
