What Counts as Medical Waste?


Medical waste is generally defined as any waste generated during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of humans or animals that may be contaminated with blood, bodily fluids, or other potentially infectious materials. This includes waste from hospitals, dental offices, urgent care clinics, dialysis centers, veterinary practices, med spas, and even tattoo studios.


The EPA's direct authority over medical waste is limited today because the federal Medical Waste Tracking Act expired in 1991 after a pilot program. As a result, states primarily regulate medical waste. For example, in Arizona, that responsibility largely falls to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), alongside OSHA's bloodborne pathogen standard and Department of Transportation rules for shipping. 1. Sharps Waste
